A special note about Projection Televisions.
Projection TV picture tubes typically cost $300-$500 each. If the set has a problem with either the vertical or horizontal deflection circuits the set will try to blank the picture. You may or may not have sound. Most of the time the set seems to be dead.
This is an effort to prevent the CRTs from being burned. If one CRT burns usually all three are burned. For life. Now you are looking at $900 to $1500 for tubes. Plus labor to change them.
Manufacturers take great lengths to protect those tubes.
